Statement about “The Assistant’s Nightmare”
A theater stage, before the play has started, has potential. All sorts of actions could take place. The stage and props are only a situation, rather than a statement. The circumstances are presented but not the words and people that will eventually lead to a conclusion. The importance of each of the objects that make up the set is magnified. The chairs, the bed, the vase in the corner, are ready to play a significant role. But as of yet, these events are not described. I have been exploring this potential for action in several different series of drawings. In one series I have been drawing back drops from 19th century cabinet photographs, in another the props that accompany them. In a large scale drawing installation I present props in a more theatrical setting. In each case I am interested in creating a space that anticipates action by excluding the human presence that would normally be part of the scene.
