Kuan Chang

Born: 1940 Princeton, New Jersey
Lives in Marin County, California

“Sensitive”, “delicate” and “carefully” crafted are the most common adjectives used to describe the compositions of Kuan Chang. In his own words, his work derives from an admiration of Medieval Chinese and Japanese paintings given a modern minimalist reconciliation with his cultural and intellectual heritage.

As surely as Pollock was inspired by the Mexican Muralists and Picasso by African sculpture, Kuan Chang has evolved a unique non-specific referential style and method rooted in the subtleties of an Asian aesthetic.

Using minimalist compositions and organic structure, he has created intimate environments inhabited by subtle and mysterious images. The works are created on gesso-coated canvas or paper imbedded with natural fibers and thread. With these materials, Kuan Chang carefully “draws” on and textures the surface, which is then stained to create depth and an aura of antiquity.
