Michael Leary's small photographs of the Pacific are intimate portraits of a powerful, unforgiving body of water. In each photograph, we see opposite characteristics emerge. There is change and stasis, clarity and fog, detail and abstraction. In some, the horizon line is distinct while in others it is nearly invisible. Nothing can absolutely contain it.
The images were created using a large format camera. The negatives are then contact printed to a rag paper coated with platinum and palladium. This type of printing provides the greatest tonal range of any method using chemical development.
Michael Leary made his first print while serving in the US Army in Germany in the late 1970's.
His work has been exhibited in New York, Miami and San Francisco.
