Sgrafitto and Key Corner Frames

The word sgrafitto comes from the Italian term ‘graffiare’. It means to scratch or scratch through one layer to another layer. This technique became popular during the Italian Renaissance period as a way of adding designs to the corners of frames.

After the frame is leafed, a thin layer of paint is applied. Once dry, a tool is used to scratch a design into the painted layer revealing the gold underneath.
